Drawing a myriad of musical practices toward a single, luminous conviction: that music can shake us loose from the disconnect that closes us off from one another, Beverly Glenn-Copeland and Elizabeth Copeland’s work surrenders to the beauty, pain and great capacity for healing that courses through life in all its forms. In its unguarded sincerity, their music invites you to share in its courage. To imagine a new world of community and connection. It’s an extraordinary melding of jazz and folk, filtered through the prism of Glenn’s classical upbringing and Elizabeth’s theatre training.

The diverse works of this enigmatic couple has been gathering momentum in recent years thanks to a reissue of the extraordinary folk-jazz explorations of Glenn’s debut self-titled album (1970) and the widespread discovery of his acclaimed masterpiece Keyboard Fantasies, an ahead-of-it’s-time synth exploration which combines the essence of new-age minimalism, early Detroit techno and the warmth of traditional songwriting — originally recorded in 1986, right here in Huntsville.

Glenn’s latest album, The One Ahead — his first collection of new music in nearly two decades — deepens these explorations, casting searching light into how all of us must dissolve the harms of this world and carry each other forward into the next. It has a funky, energetic sound with Glenn’s iconic powerhouse vocals. It’s another high point in an illustrious career that has defied categorisation and included collaborations with world-renown artists like Bon Iver and Sam Smith.

The couple returns for the first time in over 30 years to the perform at the Algonquin Theatre, the place where they first shared the stage together in their early careers. Joined by an ensemble from the Queer Songbook Orchestra, Glenn and Elizabeth invite us into their extraordinary artistic landscape through an evening of song, community and shared joy. Where the music reminds us of our collective power and strength, and gives us nourishment to carry on, together.
