CALL FOR DIRECTORS: SPRING MUSICAL 2026
The Huntsville Festival of the Arts and the Rotary Club of Huntsville invite applications from Directors for their 2026 spring musical. We are looking for experienced, creative directors who are interested in bringing their vision to life and creating theatrical magic on the Algonquin Theatre stage.
Application Information
To apply, please prepare and submit the following items:
- A cover letter stating the musical title(s) in which you are interested along with a synopsis and links to videos if available. (Please provide more than one suggestion, as all musicals will not be available or appropriate for the Huntsville audience.)
- A current resume highlighting relevant experience
- Names and numbers of two arts-related references, for example, theatre groups for which you have worked previously

***Interviews will be conducted the week of July 7-9th – final dates and times to be determined.
Additional notes
- The Spring musical will take place April 2nd through 19th, with auditions in October/November and rehearsals starting in January.
- While we strive to interview as many candidates as possible, we cannot guarantee that all applicants will be interviewed.
- Any suggested productions are subject to the availability of performing rights.
- Huntsville Festival of the Arts is a volunteer community theatre organization – this is a volunteer position.
- The board may elect not to stage a spring musical if an acceptable play submission is not available.
Director Proposal Criteria
For your interview, we will discuss your understanding of the play(s) you have selected and how each will be realized in the production. Please be prepared to discuss the following topics:
1) How you would like to tell the story:
- What is the style of the production?
- How does this story engage the audience?
2) The musical’s intended audience and how we will reach them
3) Technical difficulty of the musical score
4) Casting requirements:
- Size of cast
- Your perception of the characters
- Vocal ranges needed
- Who would be included – mainly adult? Combination of youth and adults?
5) Audition process
6) Rehearsal process and requirements
7) Set and Props Ideas
8) Lighting and Sound Ideas
9) Costume Ideas
10) Do you have a team in mind for vocal director, choreography, stage manager, rehearsal pianist, etc.?
11) Any commitments that would conflict with rehearsal or show dates
