ABOUT THE ARTIST

Featuring a blend of acoustic instruments, rural soundscapes, and wistful vocals, Great Lake Swimmers are a critically acclaimed indie-folk group led by songwriter/vocalist Tony Dekker with a revolving backing band. Based in Toronto, the group emerged with a succession of heavily atmospheric albums recorded in old silos and rural country churches. The music has developed that pastoral warmth over subsequent albums through a continued vision to record and perform in acoustically unique and historical locales. They are renowned for their homespun folk and lush, intimate Americana in their live shows.

Great Lake Swimmers celebrated their 15th anniversary in 2018 with the release of The Waves, The Wake, which displayed both their pop-oriented side as well as a new direction utilizing instruments like marimba, harp, lute, and woodwinds and adopted a more orchestral and improvisational approach to modern folk music. They have been shortlisted for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize and nominated twice for Canada’s Juno Awards, with the CBC calling them “a national treasure.”

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Ben Caplan is both the roar of the hurricane and the eye of the storm. He has an uncanny ability to channel both wild abandon and quiet introspection. His songwriting pulls from many diverse influences but both his music and his lyrics regularly draw from his Jewish heritage. Often mixing biblical imagery and klezmer inflected melodies, Caplan re-appropriates ancient sounds and themes with a decidedly contemporary twist.

Ben released his first studio album in 2011, and has spent the last ten years recording music and performing to ever growing audiences in music clubs and theatres around the world. For the ten year anniversary of his first release, Caplan has recorded a retrospective collection of stripped back re-interpretations of songs from across his catalogue. The album, entitled Recollection, will be released in October of 2021 followed by an extensive European and Canadian tour.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Multi-platinum, iconic Canadian artist Dean Brody is celebrating the biggest years of his career. No country artist has owned the Canadian “Live” stage more than Dean in recent years with three national arena tours (2 breaking national ticket sale records), an acoustic national tour and as the only Canadian country artist to hold a 7-year residency at Toronto’s Budweiser Stage.

Not one to ever slow down, Brody has been busy setting records and marking major career milestones. 2021 saw the acclaimed artist land his sixth and seventh number ones at Canadian country radio on back-to-back duets with his history-making track “Boys” feat. country music’s fastest rising star Mickey Guyton and “More Drinkin’ Than Fishin’” with labelmate Jade Eagleson. He also secured his 18th CCMA Award, landing the “Top Selling Canadian Single” with his #1 track feat. The Reklaws, “Can’t Help Myself.” He kicked off 2022 by earning a JUNO Awards nomination for Country Album of the Year and securing his first TRIPLE-PLATINUM single with “Bring Down The House,” making him only the second artist in Canadian history to ever achieve this status on a single. He also landed his eighth #1 with his single “Where’d You Learn How to Do That.” Brody celebrated these moments with fans throughout the year with headlining stops across the country including Budweiser Stage (Toronto), Festival Country Lotbinière and Dauphin Country Fest, a 10-night residency at the Calgary Stampede as well as a show in his hometown of Fort Steele with the NHLPA.

A passionate storyteller and unmatched lyricist, Dean has risen and continues to remain at the top of the Canadian country landscape with an impressive 34 Top-10 singles (including 8 #1’s), 18 CCMA Awards, 2 JUNOs, more than 425+ million global streams and numerous gold and platinum certified singles (including 1 triple platinum and 3 double platinum). Only Shania Twain has more Canadian streams than Dean when looking at Canadian country artists “lifetime” results.

While a consistently celebrated entertainer, Dean also dedicates a large part of his life to philanthropic efforts through his charity, The Dean Brody Foundation. To continue his foundations’ mission, Dean has recently entered into a partnership with International Justice Mission (IJM), a global organization that shares the core values and goals of The Dean Brody Foundation. Working together to prevent violence and exploitation before it happens, the multi-year partnership with IJM will provide Dean the opportunity to work as an IJM Canada Ambassador and highlight his decade-long fight for justice on a global scale.

MUSKOKA’S ONLY PINK FLOYD SHOW

Acoustic Muskoka Productions and Huntsville Festival of the Arts present ACOUSTIC FLOYD!

Muskoka’s only Pink Floyd show had a successful sold-out run of medium sized venues in 2022. With the backing of Huntsville Festival of the Arts the company is now staging Acoustic Floyd 2.0. With the inclusion of some new songs to the repertoire and the addition of original short film segments, this updated production is going to be a concert for the ears, eyes, and mind.
Musically, Acoustic Floyd is a textured take on the Floyd’s catalogue that reflects some of the music’s seldom thought of attributes. David Gilmour’s lapsteel that slides across a lot of the band’s records. The ever-featured female background vocals reminiscent of gospel choirs. The solo saxophone that wails as much as Gilmour’s guitar. Then there’s the acoustic guitar playing, singer/songwriter that is Roger Waters. Don’t worry, this show does not overlook the early years with Syd Barrett. Acoustic Floyd offers a beautiful twist on the twistedly beautiful music of Pink Floyd.

The band features Sean Cotton on acoustic guitars, vocals, and foot drumming; Tamica Herod and Liz Anderson on vocals, and hand percussion; Chris Hess on saxophones, and vocals; George Axon on lapsteel and guitars; Mike “Lopez” Phillip’s on bass guitar.

JIM CUDDY BAND

April 12, 2023

FESTIVAL FAVORITE JIM CUDDY RETURNS TO HUNTSVILLE!

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jim Cuddy returns to the festival stage with a treasure trove of songs that have become indelible in the soundtrack of our Canadian lives. His extraordinary catalogue of songs continues to find new ways to balance personal reflection and plainspoken storytelling, remaining both intimate and accessible.

As one half of one of Blue Rodeo’s songwriting partnership, Jim Cuddy has one of the most recognizable voices in Canadian music thanks to omnipresent hits such as “Try,” “5 Days In May,” and “Bad Timing.” As a group Blue Rodeo has sold over 5 million records world-wide, won countless JUNO Awards, been inducted in to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, received a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame and Jim (along with songwriting partner Greg Keelor) was invested as Officers of the Order of Canada.

In 1998, in between Blue Rodeo projects, Jim released his first solo album All In Time and hit the road with the eponymous Jim Cuddy Band featuring Colin Cripps (guitar), Anne Lindsay (fiddle), Joel Anderson (drums), Bazil Donovan (bass) and Steve O’Connor (keyboards). Since that first release the Jim has recorded three more solo albums; The Light That Guides You Home (2006), Skyscraper Soul (2011), Constellation (2018). Jim’s latest release, Countrywide Soul, is a celebration of sorts – a celebration of music and the musicians who join him on stage each night.

After an extensive tour in support of their album, Constellation, The Jim Cuddy Band reconvened at Jim’s family farm in Southern Ontario. Inspired by the band’s live show, Jim wanted to capture this energy on record and showcase each member’s skill, allowing them to stretch out and shine. Produced by Tim Vesely, Jim Cuddy and Colin Cripps, Countrywide Soul was recorded live on the top floor of Jim’s barn and kept as natural as possible to retain the woody sound of the barn board room and the energy that only comes from playing together live.

“When we go into the studio to make records, the songs are born out of my imagination and the band contribute their incredible talents to make those ideas come to life. The songs evolve and become part of our collective imagination,” explains Jim. “But it is on tour that they really take flight. We are connected by art. We are connected by what we create together. That’s what I wanted to capture on this record. How much I enjoy listening to the band reveal their imagination and add their creativity to the songs was really the inspiration. How vital that is to me. So as much as this is a musicians’ record, it’s really an example – if you’re lucky – of what bands can create together.”

To achieve his goal on Countrywide Soul, Jim re-worked a number of songs previously recorded for his solo career and with Blue Rodeo. To round out the record, he wrote two new songs and included a couple of favourite cover songs.

“When choosing songs for the album, I tried to find those in which I could change the mood and tone as in ‘All In Time’ or songs that had been underdeveloped on previous records such as ‘Clearer View’,” says Jim. “’Almost Persuaded’ was a song Blue Rodeo performed in the early days. It was a favourite of an old friend of ours, so I recorded this in her honour.”

LOWEST OF THE LOW

April 12, 2023

THE MOST LAUDED INDEPENDENT CANADIAN BAND OF ALL TIME

ABOUT THE ARTIST

It’s a strange thing to be one of the most lauded independent Canadian bands of all time; it’s almost a back-handed compliment, since it feels like the “independent” qualifier is somehow intended to lessen the achievement. Shouldn’t it be cause for greater celebration when you make your name without the muscle and reach of a major label?

The story is stranger still when you consider that some of Lowest of the Low’s success came in spite of themselves. Never at ease with the ‘big machine’ of the music industry, they may have indulged in more than one bout of self-sabotage along the way back in the Nineties. That simply means they can take a certain pride in knowing that the victories they did score (and the defeats they endured) were always of their own making, which is far better than putting your fate in someone else’s hands. That’s a true hallmark of independence.

You can trace the roots of the Low back to 1983, when Ron Hawkins and David Alexander played together as teenagers in a heavily politicized, straight-edge band called Social Insecurity. They rubbed intellectual elbows and shared small stages with Toronto punk scene legends like L’Étranger, most famous these days for having two of their members represent the NDP in the House of Commons. That led to the band Popular Front in the late 80s, where Ron and David were joined by guitarist Stephen Stanley. At one point they boasted as many as eight players, but the three friends remained the core as other members came and went. While the music was a little slicker than their punk days and contained Afro-Caribbean flourishes, the focus on socially conscious lyrical content remained.

After a few years of gigging, the trio felt restless with both their sound and scene. They began jamming at acoustic open-mic nights with a clutch of new songs that were stripped down yet infectious. The romantic-but-realistic lyrics, assembled from character sketches and journal entries in Ron’s ever-present notebook as he wandered the streets of Toronto, were always front and centre. Popular Front evolved into Lowest of the Low, and shortly afterwards Hawkins traded his four-string in when John Arnott joined on bass.

The quartet built a faithful following and a very full dance card on the strength of their joyous live shows, where they perfected the Low’s mix of clever wordplay, razor-sharp hooks and airtight harmonies. They also began recording what were meant to be demos in a film production studio with friend Andy Koyama. There wasn’t much interest from the A&R men of the day (and the feeling was mutual), so they elected to plow ahead on their own and press up CDs and tapes of those demos to sell off the stage. By the time 4,000 copies of what came to be known as Shakespeare My Butt… had found homes, the Low secured distribution through indie outfit Page Publications (run by ex-Barenaked Ladies singer Stephen Page’s father Victor). Within what felt like a few weeks, they were setting sales records for indie bands at the HMV Superstore and in heavy rotation on Toronto alt-rock station CFNY with songs like “Salesmen, Cheats And Liars”, “Rosy And Grey”, “Bleed A Little While Tonight” and “Eternal Fatalist”.

JAY DOUGLAS

LEGENDARY BLUES & REGGAE ARTIST PLAYS THE ETWELL CONCERT SERIES

CONCERT RUNS RAIN OR SHINE

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jay Douglas is a 3 times Juno Awards nominee, a music producer and band leader of the Jay Douglas All-Star Band. He has performed at various festivals worldwide, including the likes of Rastafest Festival in Toronto and the 4 Seasons Reggae Cruise in Atlanta, Georgia.

Jay Douglas first took to the stage in Montego Bay, Jamaica many years ago as a teenager. With over 45 years of showmanship, he has developed a wide-ranging repertoire and plenty of stage charisma. Back in the early ‘60s and 70’s, Jay was the frontman for “The Cougars,” who, with their skill and verve, lit up clubs in Toronto, Montreal, New York, and Washington D.C. with Soul, Blues, Funk & Reggae. Jay has since shared his gift at various venues all the way from Hong Kong to the Mediterranean.

On top of numerous television appearances and acting roles, Douglas has earned prime-time support slots for a veritable “Who’s Who” of musical legends including Fats Domino, Joe Tex, Percy Sledge, bluesman Roscoe Gordon, The Manhattans, The Drifters, Reggae icons Toots and the Maytals, Sly & Robbie, Steel Pulse, Ziggy Marley, The Fab 5 band, Freddie McGregor, Third World, and his friend actor/comedian Jim Carrey.

Jay Douglas has always had a strong connection with blues and jazz, which is glaringly obvious in his newest album released in 2022, Confession. In Douglas’ own words “Confession is a new album that serves as a testament to my long love of Blues and the type of Rhythm and Blues that came out in the 50’s from artists such as Rosco Gordon, Johnny Ace, Bobby Bland, Dave Bartholomew and Ray Charles.” The album since its release in spring 2022 has been well received reaching top 20 chartings on major Blues charts in US, Europe, Canada, and Australia.

LA BULLE – BY CORPUS

April 12, 2023

OUTDOOR CONTEMPORARY PERFORMANCE FOR ALL AGES

ABOUT THE ARTIST

La bulle features a one-of-a-kind bubble tent (a character in its own right) and its confined inhabitant: Pierrot, the iconic loner and dreamer. Together, they live in transparent symbiosis. In this theatrical setting, there is nowhere to hide: an absurd situation, fully exploited by a lucid and lunar Pierrot. Through mime, dance, text, even drawing, he tries to connect with his audience. Dressed in the archetypal black and white costume and make-up, he manages to create bonds, alas all ephemeral, with those who are willing to give him a little time. He embraces solitude whole-heartedly, and swims freely like a fish in water in the realm of dreams. Poetry and humour are always at his side, true to CORPUS’ vocation.
La bulle was conceived long before COVID. The show was already exploring the theme of social distancing before it became a concern for all. This new work also speaks of an equally contemporary paradox: private space in full transparency. La bulle places the audience in the round. Audience members are seated or free to circulate around the set, without constraint or restriction of movement

Conceived, directed and designed by David Danzon & Carolin Lindner
Performed by David Danzon/ Guy Marsan (TBC)

LEMON – DRAG PERFORMANCE

April 12, 2023

DRAG PERFORMANCE FROM TORONTO’S TRUE QUEEN OF THE NORTH AND FRIENDS

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born and raised in Toronto, Lemon is a true queen of the North. Spending her youth inside of the world of conservatory and competitive dance with Vlad’s Dance Company in Richmond Hill, she built a foundation and a passion for dance performance. At the age of 18, Lemon left Toronto with big dreams to find her way in the epicenter of professional dance, New York City. On full scholarship, she attended the prestigious Alvin Ailey School studying modern dance and ballet, two years at a contemporary ballet company in New York City, and another year in the city fulfilling her OPT (Optional Practical Training). She was on track to become a full time company dancer, but as the universe always does in the most sly of ways, another door of opportunity opened itself to her.

Being openly gay in NYC, Lemon found a community inside of the bar and nightlife scene. And like a passing summer breeze, she caught wind of a local drag competition called Lady Liberty with a prize of $500, which no young artist surviving in the Big Apple could pass up. This competition has seen the likes of well-known queens such as Jackie Cox, Jan Sport, and Rosé; she knew winning would bring a sense of notoriety and accomplishment she craved. She competed and sadly placed 3rd. But if Lemon had learned anything so far in her life it’s that you hustle and hone your craft and try again until you get first place!

She listened and learned, sculpted her makeup, refined her style, conceptualized her performance, and went back to sweep the competition and claim 1st prize, all while dressed as one of her greatest inspirations, Paris Hilton, doused in Tinkerbell perfume. From there, Lemon was born and a force to be reckoned with. Catching the eye of Sasha Velour, she went on to walk in her opening ceremony collaboration for New York Fashion Week, alongside performances by Shea Couleé, Farrah Moan, and Christina Aguilera. She began working weekly shows at drag bars across Manhattan and before she knew it, was a full time, fully realized drag queen.

Lemon went on to compete in the World Pride edition of Lady Liberty at the Playboy Club, gaining the attention of Brita Filter and Alyssa Edwards, and snatching the crown for first place. Like a vision in the night, the official announcement for Canada’s Drag Race was released and Lemon was never more confident in anything, that being on that show’s first season was a stroke of destiny. Calling both Toronto and NYC home, Lemon’s journey has just begun and she has big plans to take the world by storm because when life gives you Lemon, Lemon gives you life.

SOLEMN AND SOARING, BACKED BY A SWIRLING BLEND OF INDIE, SOUL AND ELECTRONIC SOUNDSCAPES, MOURNFUL SAXOPHONE AND PULSE-QUICKENING FINGER-PICKING, AYSANABEE’S STRIKING SOUND IS EQUAL PARTS HYPNOTIC AND MELODIC

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Aysanabee is a multi-instrumentalist, producer and singer songwriter currently based in Toronto. He is Oji-Cree, Sucker Clan of the Sandy Lake First Nation a remote fly-in community in the far reaches of Northwestern Ontario. He began creating music under his mother’s maiden name during the pandemic when the stillness allowed him to slow down and create music, he says, more directly represents himself as an artist. Solemn and soaring, backed by a swirling blend of indie, soul and electronic soundscapes, mournful saxophone and pulse-quickening finger-picking, Aysanabee’s striking sound is equal parts hypnotic and melodic which has been compared to Bon Iver, Matt Corby, Don Ross, Kim Churchill, Kings of Leon and Sam Smith. His debut album, Watin (2022) named after his grandfather, includes 10 tracks and nine interludes featuring the voice of his grandfather and is both part music and journalism, artistry and expression. “Watin actually started out as a series of conversations between myself and my grandfather,” says Aysanabee. “We spent the first year of the pandemic talking about things we’ve never spoke about, his life on the trapline on Sandy Lake First Nation, falling in love, his life in residential school and then leaving everything behind..we never spoke of it until now. Even though we were over 1,000 kilometres apart, it was probably the closest we’ve ever been.”In a short amount of time, three singles were released including “Ego Death” (Oct 2022), “Nomads” (Aug 2022) which charted on Billboard Canada and became #1 on CBC Music and finally, “We Were Here” (July 2022), which charted on the Indigenous Music Countdown and featured in an episode of Station 19.In a whirlwind year, Aysanabee performed nearly 100 shows on major stages and festivals and venues across the country and across the ocean including Ottawa Bluesfest, Montreal Jazzfest, Mariposa, Riverfest, Summerfolk, Mission Folk, Alianait, Wake the Giant and many more. The artist has shared the stage with such notable acts including The National, Digging Roots, Amanda Rheaume, Sam Roberts, Our Lady Peace, DJ Shub, Julian Taylor, Jeremy Dutcher, Dan Mangan Mavis Staples, July Talk, Half Moon Run, Tokyo Police Club, Steven Page, Aqua, and more. The album is being released through Ishkode Records, founded by Amanda Rheaume and Shoshona Kish, one of the first Indigenous and women-owned labels in the country.

November 3, 2022

ADVANCE ACCESS FOR MEMBERS ONLY
MEMBERS PURCHASE BY CALLING 705-789-4975

‘Be Our Guest’ as the most enchanted musical of all time, Beauty and the Beast, comes to the Algonquin Theatre for the annual HfA/Rotary Spring Musical running from March 24-April 2, 2023.

Featuring over 50 local cast & crew members, this “tale as old as time” has thrilled more than 20 million people worldwide with show-stopping musical numbers, astonishing sets, and lavish costumes. Based on the Academy Award-winning animated feature, the stage version includes all of the wonderful songs written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, along with new songs by Mr. Menken and Tim Rice. The original Broadway production ran for over thirteen years and was nominated for nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

The classic story tells of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed into his former self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity. A storybook theatrical experience your whole family will love!

The Huntsville Festival and the Huntsville Rotary Club want to share an exciting opportunity regarding their annual Spring Community Musical. The 2023 production will be Beauty and the Beast. After three years of Covid related issues, we will finally be back on stage and we expect very strong interest from the community, along the lines of the 2019 production of Mamma Mia, which broke all previous sales records!  As a program book advertiser, your message will be exposed to a wide audience, with over 2,300 ticket buyers projected over the seven shows, running March 24 to April 2 in Huntsville’s Algonquin Theatre.

Advertisers will receive bonus exposure this year as the program book will also be used for the Huntsville Festival of Music, running March 2-5, a major educational initiative of the Huntsville Festival. Modelled after the famed Kiwanis Music Festival it aims to “encourage artists of all age groups to know and love the arts and foster the values of self discipline, teamwork and excellence.” Hundreds are expected to participate and attend the classes.

Again this year’s program format will be 8 ½ x 11 book size. All ads will be in full colour. As a further bonus, ads one half page and larger also receive a pair of complimentary tickets for one of the performances, a $60 value. A follow up email regarding tickets will be sent to confirmed advertisers.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

The definition of a rebel is someone who goes against the grain. For close to thirty years now, Blue Rodeo has taken the road less travelled – and succeeded far beyond anyone’s expectations. The band emerged in the early 80’s as a countrified rock band in the era of hair metal and glossy pop. Despite sticking out like a sore thumb (or maybe because of it), their single “Try” became omni-present on radio across Canada and set in motion a three decade long career of headlining every club, theatre and arena in Canada. In 1993, when grunge rock was squeezing commercial rock off the radio, they recorded their most acoustic album, Five Days In July, and scored their biggest hit selling over a half million copies of that one record alone.

Now, with their 16th Warner Music Canada studio album – Many A Mile – Blue Rodeo’s successes are measured in terms that include induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame (2012), receiving a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award (2014) and acknowledgement that the band has steadfastly defined itself by its own terms, and in the years that ensued, sold in excess of four million records.

Reflecting back on three decades of successes and those early Blue Rodeo days, both Jim and Greg are able to fully appreciate where the band sits in the pantheon of music. “Success seemed really real when we were entertaining people at The Horseshoe. That was the top of the heap for us,” Cuddy says. “When you look back, you realize that it has just been this beautiful dream.”

ABOUT BLUE RODEO:

In the 35 years since forming, Blue Rodeo have sold over 4 million albums, received dozens of JUNO Award nominations and wins, played over 2,000 shows, been inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, received a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame, have been honoured with the Governor General’s Performing Arts award and Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor have been named to the Order of Canada.. And they’re still as strong as ever with the release of their 16th album Many A Mile, and a national tour on the horizon.

WITH SPECIAL GUEST CLEREL

A natural-born vocalist, soul singer & songwriter Clerel nurtured his taste for melody in his coastal hometown of Douala, Cameroon, where he grew up listening to music from his parents’ record collection, which ranged from church hymns and afrobeat to French chanson.

As a child, he developed a habit of singing his favorite songs to himself as a way to “listen” to them whenever he desired, an exercise that helped hone his signature smooth tone.

While he’s spent most of 2020 working on a new collection of songs, Clerel has also appeared on reality TV show “La Voix” (The Voice Canada), and earlier this summer he took part in the Montreal International Jazz Festival, where he gave a highly acclaimed performance of his original music in front of an audience of over 3000 spectators. Listeners around the world continue to fall in love with the young musician’s soulful universe.

Huntsville String Quartet

April 17, 2022

The Huntsville String Quartet, or the HSQ, had its first rehearsal in the winter of 2020. Philip Kashap, violin teacher and Director of the Huntsville Suzuki School of Music, and his wife Martha, also a violinist, were pleasantly surprised to find a violist and a cellist in Huntsville. Behn Strople, a violist, and Daniel Dennis, cellist, it turned out, were also eager to play chamber music. Together they have formed a convivial, intergenerational string quartet, a harmonious combination of musical backgrounds and experience. In the short time they have been together they have performed some of the greatest quartets including those of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Dvorak, Ravel, and Barber. They have performed on the Huntsville Festival of the Arts summer concerts, and in a series of concerts held at the home of the Huntsville Suzuki School of Music, Bethel Church, and at the Huntsville Public Library. The HSQ is thrilled to be part of the Huntsville Festival of the Arts again this summer.

Kathleen Edwards

LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR MEMBER PROGRAM

ABOUT THE ARTIST
If you ask Kathleen Edwards, the best thing she ever did was quit.

By 2014, the singer-songwriter had released four studio albums and amassed widespread critical acclaim. She had been touring since the release of her 2012 album, Voyageur, and the prospect of returning home—only to start writing her way toward another album, and another tour—felt impossibly daunting. She put her guitar away, at least for awhile: she moved back to her hometown of Ottawa and settled down in Stittsville, an old village on the western edge of town. A running inside joke with bandmate Jim Bryson about opening a coffee shop and naming it “Quitters” became reality. For years, the only new music she heard was playing in the background while she served her regulars at the shop, where she slowly started to fall in love with music again.

“I had no desire to write, no desire to play,” she says of what she refers to as her “working sabbatical.” “It allowed me all the time and space I needed to even just enjoy listening to music again. There were so many times where, if I was thinking about my own writing or playing, my heart just wasn’t in it. Opening a cafe gave me such a clean break from the weight of what I was carrying, I worked my ass off building a shop, I didn’t have to be ‘just a singer’ anymore.”

But in 2018, she received an unexpected phone call that changed that. Maren Morris, a longtime fan, invited her to Nashville for a songwriting session. Edwards accepted, and “Good Woman,” their collaboration, wound up on Morris’ 2019 album, GIRL. “It reminded me that writing and creating music is entirely my wheelhouse, and it was so easy to just jump back in and do that,” she says of her fortuitous time in Nashville. “Funny enough, the third person in the room for those two days was Ian Fitchuk, and [we] ended up starting the process of producing a record.”

Edwards made her long-anticipated return to music with Total Freedom, her fifth studio album out August 14th, 2021 via Dualtone Records. Written and recorded in Canada and Nashville with longtime collaborator/guitarist, Jim Bryson, and Grammy-winning songwriter/producer, Fitchuk, Total Freedom is both a return to form and a “hard reset,” one that empowered Edwards to write and perform entirely on her terms.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Annabelle Chvostek is a Toronto-based singer-songwriter, composer and producer whose musical achievements range from folk to jazz to indie pop. She has composed music for dance and film, co-written songs with Bruce Cockburn, and is a past member of The Wailin’ Jennys.

Her latest album String Of Pearls brings together her Canadian singer-songwriter tradition and the nostalgia of her East European heritage with a long-standing connection to Uruguay. The songs were arranged and co-produced in Montevideo by long-time collaborator, Fernando Rosa, who gathered some of Uruguay’s stellar classical, tango, and jazz musicians to add to a contemporary sound that harkens back to the grittiness of 1930s tango, vaudeville cabaret and swinging hot jazz. On the Canadian side, long-standing bandmate Tony Spina is back on drums alongside members of Toronto’s vibrant Jazz Manouche community. Toronto producer David Travers-Smith works his magic in bringing together the Canadian and Uruguayan tracking to attain a uniquely diverse cross-cultural, cross-temporal sonic montage.

Crystal Shawanda

April 13, 2022

THIS EVENT WILL TAKE PLACE RAIN OR SHINE

“Shawanda is a real deal blues artist who isn’t dabbling in blues so much as channeling it.”
Steven Ovadia, Elmore Magazine

Recent Juno winner for outstanding blues album, Crystal Shawanda is highly established as one of the leading female Blues singers in North America. The Ojibwe Potawatomi Indigenous singer was born in Wiikwemkoong First Nation on Manitoulin Island in Ontario and even though she now lives in Nashville, she keeps her roots close to her heart and soul. One has to look no further than her latest CD “Church House Blues” to feel the connection.

Crystal Shawanda · Church House Blues

ABOUT THE ARTIST

There’s a tendency these days to try to pigeonhole any artist that attempts to breach the boundaries. Chalk it up to the restrictions of radio playlists or the media’s attempt to strictly define musicians by the music it believes artists ought to be making, creative instincts be damned. Nevertheless Crystal Shawanda opted to defy those demands and chart her own path forward.

Nevertheless Crystal Shawanda opted to defy those demands and chart her own path forward. Initially signed to RCA in 2007, she hit her stride as a country singer and songwriter when she scored a top 20 hit with her song “You Can Let Go” and subsequently tallied sales of over 50,000 copies of her debut album Dawn of a New Day and subsequently debuted in the Billboard Top 20. Nevertheless, she began to realize that the blues had captured her muse, and with that, she left the label, shifted her stance and began recording albums that reflected her love of blues and her natural affinity for that sound.

As she once told an interviewer, “The whole time I was singing Patsy Cline on stage, I was singing Etta James at home.”

Her new album Church House Blues (due April 17th on True North Records) reflects that dedication and devotion and finds her co-writing seven of the ten songs on the album. Produced by her husband, collaborator and cowriter Dewayne Strobel, it not only marks her fourth blues effort to date, but one of her most demonstrative as well. That’s evident at the outset, from the fiery delivery of the title track, the riveting drive of “New Orleans Is Sinking,” and the assertive strains of “Rather Be Alone,” to the quiet, contemplative desire and despair that scorches “Evil Memory,” the radio-ready hooks illuminated in “Hey Love,” and the emotive strains instilled in the bittersweet ballads “When It Comes To Love” and “Bigger Than the Blues.” At the center of it all is Crystal’s evocative vocals, a powerful, provocative force of nature that elevates each encounter and sends the album’s entries soaring towards the stratosphere.

Credit is also due some spectacular guest artists, including session superstar Dave Roe on bass (Johnny Cash, Yola, Ceelo Green, among the many), the McCrary Sisters on backing vocals, Dana Robbins of Delbert McClinton’s band on sax, and Peter Keys of Lynyrd Skynyrd playing keys.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

ABOUT THE SHOW

Songs in the Key of Cree is a compilation of songs written over the past thirty years by Cree-Canadian playwright/songwriter/pianist Tomson Highway. The songs in the show are taken from five of his musicals over the years, in order: “Rose,” “The Incredible Adventures of Mary Jane Mosquito,” “The (Post) Mistress,” “The Sage, the Dancer, and the Fool” and a new work in progress as yet to be named. A master pianist, composer and songwriter with a repertoire spanning three decades, Highway’s music takes inspiration from a wide range of styles, including country, Brazilian samba, jazz and French Canadian folk songs with influences of Cole Porter and Kurt Weill. What makes the songs unique is their Cree lyrics.Cree is the most spoken Native language in Canada today. “Winnipeg, Manitoba, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Chicoutimi, Quebec, Ottawa…” that’s all Cree, a very rhythmic language that lends itself very naturally to music and music-making. And the style of the music is “cabaret.”

In addition to his Order of Canada, Tomson Highway is a JUNO-nominated performer and was named one of the 100 most important people in Canadian history by Maclean’s magazine.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Tomson Highway:
Tomson Highway was born in a snow bank on the Manitoba/Nunavut border to a family of nomadic caribou hunters. He was raised off-reserve, in the spectacularly beautiful natural landscape that is Canada’s sub-Arctic. He had the great privilege of growing up in two languages, neither of which was French or English; but Cree, his mother tongue, and Dene, the language of the neighbouring nation; a people with whom they roamed and hunted.  Following an education where he earned both a Bachelor of Music and the equivalent of a Bachelor of Arts with an English major, he spent seven years immersed in the field of Native social work. He then combined his education and training and poured himself into writing.  Today Tomson enjoys an international career as playwright, novelist, pianist, and song writer. Tomson is best known for universal hits such as The Rez Sisters, Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing, Rose, Ernestine Shuswap Gets her Trout, (The Post) Mistress and the best-selling novel Kiss of the Fur Queen and his recently published memoir Permanent Astonishment. ABOUT THE ARTIST

Michael Kaeshammer has invested a lot – countless hours at the keyboard, hundreds of recordings, thousands of live performances, millions of miles in the air and on the road – all in pursuit of a mastery of 12 notes across 88 keys. But for the acclaimed Canadian pianist and singer, there is no set destination, no achievable end point on his path; it’s all about the journey itself, and that journey will always be ongoing.

“When I play, I don’t worry about if it’s jazz or pop or classical or whatever; I just play what I hear and let the music decide what it wants to be,” begins Kaeshammer. “Sure, there are different styles, different eras, different approaches, but when you really look at it, it’s all just music based on 12 notes.”

Born and bred in Germany, Kaeshammer began performing club, theatre, and festival stages throughout Europe in his early teens and continued on that trajectory after emigrating to Canada’s West Coast with his family in the mid-‘90s. His first studio album, Blue Keys, dropped in 1996 and spurred a consistent sequence of heralded releases and high-profile international performances. Through it all, the world watched as he grew from child prodigy to full-fledged phenom; from unparalleled pianist to virtuosic songwriter.

“I do listen to a lot of music, but I’m not overly influenced by other people; it’s more about trying to learn something new every day,” muses Kaeshammer about his musical evolution. “I’ll take pretty much any opportunity if it’s going to help me discover new things and help me progress.”

Those opportunities have been as wide-reaching as the artist’s subsequent breadth of style, and include: opening slots for the likes of Ray Charles and Anne Murray; stints backing singers like Marva Wright, the late blues queen of New Orleans; co-writing sessions with rockers Randy Bachman and Colin James; official Olympic Games performances in several world cities; and TV specials on numerous networks – including one set to premiere on PBS in March 2020.

William Prince

April 13, 2022

William Prince approaches the big questions with humility and curiosity. Prince’s influences and references, from the gospel of his childhood to the pantheon of classic outlaw country singers, baseball and the great beyond, shape his approach to songcraft, a masterclass in skillful simplicity.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Prince’s JUNO Award winning debut Earthly Days, released in 2015 and subsequently reissued by Glassnote Records and Six Shooter Records (Canada), introduced the songwriter’s poignant philosophy and rich baritone to the world. Prince made his breakout with the song “Breathless,” which found audiences worldwide and reached the B List at BBC’s Radio 2. Reliever, Prince’s sophomore album (2020), saw Prince reconvene with producers Scott Nolan in Winnipeg and Dave Cobb in Nashville.

For his second album, Prince began with a single word, Reliever, which informed a collection of exceptionally rendered explorations of what, who and how peace is found. Relievers come in all forms; for Prince, it is song. Recent accolades include the Polaris Music Prize Long List, SOCAN Songwriting Prize (“The Spark”) and the German Record Critics’ Award for Album of the Year.

For his newest release Gospel First Nation, William Prince tells us this story through the music of his childhood, songs of faith, struggle and grace. These are songs he learned and sang with his father in that chapel named for his great grandfathers, all preachers. William’s family home, the community of Peguis First Nation, is named for Prince’s ancestor, Chief Peguis, one of the highest regarded leaders of his time. When Chief Peguis was baptized, he took the name William King; in keeping with royal protocol, as an expression of pride and with the unknown weight of the consequences of all of the decisions he made with the arrival of colonizers on the land, named his children Princes. Like names, the songs of Gospel First Nation link generations, from son to father to grandfather and back even further.

Prince’s trajectory from Peguis First Nation in Manitoba, Canada, to opening for Neil Young, has seen the relative newcomer find esteem and career-changing opportunity wherever he performs.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
In March 2020 Tom Wilson asked Iskwē (and Ojibway jazz musician, Chuck Copenace) to be a guest performer with him on the Indspire Awards, duetting with him on his song, Blue Moon Drive. The two artists had never performed together but the chemistry and the magic was instantaneous. The artists came together again to record a full band, studio version of the song.  It’s been a really inspiring project for everyone involved and we’re thrilled to share it with you and we hope you love it as much as we do.

iskwē | ᐃᐢᑫᐧᐤ is, among many other things, an artist – a creator and communicator of music and of movement, of pictures, poetry and prose. And through it all, she’s a teller of stories that have impacted our past and will inform our future.

Tom Wilson is a Canadian music legend, famed storyteller and visual artist. In his memoir, Beautiful Scars, Wilson reveals the impact of discovering his Indigenous heritage after a chance encounter with a stranger caused him to question everything he had always known about his past. Musically, Wilson is best known for his work with Blackie & The Rodeo Kings and Lee Harvey Osmond, the latter receiving a 2020 Juno Award for the album “Mohawk”.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Surviving life’s dizzying highs and crushing lows is a cakewalk compared to writing about them. But if you can do it, the results are very often liberating, cathartic, and a gateway to electrifying music. Witness Gord Sinclair’s Taxi Dancers.

The solo debut from the musician best known as bassist and songwriter with Canadian rock legends The Tragically Hip brings several firsts. Chiefly, it’s the first release from a member of the band since the passing of frontman Gord Downie in 2017, an event that united the nation.

Taxi Dancers is a farewell of sorts, fearlessly exploring Sinclair’s despair about losing a lifelong friend and bandmate. But it is also a clear-eyed survey of what’s good in the world, and a profound statement about why sorrow must be viewed in tandem with joy. Both are elemental aspects of living, and music — especially rock music, with its boundless capacity for nuance, shading, and sheer emotional heft — is perhaps life’s purest mirror.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Chemistry, passion, energy and evolution are a few words that come to mind when Andy Maize and Josh Finlayson talk about more than twenty-five years together in Skydiggers. Thanks to years on the road and in the studio, Skydiggers are not only riding all of those years of momentum but continuing to evolve as well. According to Andy Maize and Josh Finlayson, one of the keys is chemistry. “You can spend your life searching for chemistry” Andy muses. “For any relationship to remain vital and continue to grow you need chemistry. We were lucky to have found that early on with each other.”

One day, if someone with perfect penmanship and a great memory for details takes up a Canadian Rock Family Tree project and plots the development of the Canadian roots rock community, they may discover that many – if not all – branches and roots at some point interconnect with the Skydiggers. “We’ve played with other people, other people have come into this circle and played with us. They’ve put their stamp on our music. But we recognize there is something consistent and something we all value that is threaded through all our records.” says Finlayson. Maize deeply appreciates the contributions of every artist who has played with the Skydiggers over the years. “We realize how fortunate we are to be part of a community. And so everybody is a Skydigger – past, present and future.”

Julian Taylor is a songwriter at the top of his game, garnering a recent CFMA Solo Artist of the year, and was a Polaris Prize nominee for 2021. The Ridge, his latest recording, is a tender and heartfelt exploration of childhood and family, and finds the artist at his most reflective. Taylor is an artist who defies genre, but this latest recording takes us back to his roots, evoking his childhood soundtrack of Lightfoot, The Band, and his grandfather’s classic country records, while being true to his own path as leader of multiple bands. Of West Indian and Mohawk descent, Taylor first made his name as frontman of Staggered Crossing in the early 2000s. These days, however, the soulful singer/guitarist might be on stage one night playing with his eponymous band, spilling out electrified rhythm and blues glory, and the next he is at a folk festival delivering a captivating solo singer-songwriter set. In everything he does, Taylor has carved his own path, creating genre-free music with a generosity of spirit and a strong belief in the healing powers of song. We are lucky to have him for such an intimate performance.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Chantal Kreviazuk – one of Canada’s most accomplished songwriters and recognizable voices –released her eighth studio album, “Get to You,” this summer. Heralded by the title track and first single, the album features 11 songs, all written and produced by Chantal with Dylan Wiggins.

“This album means so much to me because it has a positive message throughout about self-love, acceptance and perseverance,” says Chantal. “It’s also the album I created the most independently without outside influence. It’s my essence of recording at the moment and for that I am so proud and happy.”

The choice to proceed with the release of an album during a global pandemic was an easy one for Chantal. “The wonderful thing about music is that it is always welcomed and needed,” she says. “In times of crisis, it offers solace and comfort. Without question, now is the time to release music.”

Chantal Kreviazuk is a platinum-selling, three-time Juno Award-winning artist from Winnipeg. In 2016, she returned with her sixth album “Hard Sail” after a nearly seven-year break from recorded music. During that time, she was focused on raising her three sons with husband Raine Maida, as well as her other musical passion, crafting songs. Chantal has written for Drake, Pitbull, Kendrick Lamar, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Josh Groban and countless others. A holiday album – “Christmas Is A Way Of Life, My Dear” – followed in 2019, and a brand new album “Get To You” was released this summer.

In 2014, Chantal and Raine became members of the Order of Canada, recognizing their efforts to raise awareness and support for numerous causes including human and animal rights, mental health, education and the environment. Chantal has been an ambassador to War Child for nearly two decades and one of the organization’s founding artists. Raine and Chantal released their first collaborative album together as MOON VS SUN, “I’m Going to Break Your Heart,” as well as an accompanying documentary, earlier this year.\

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Mr. Johnson brings his massive, well known and highly influential song book to life in this one man acoustic performance drenched in the blues and folk music that inspired his Big Sugar catalog. Singing his modern classics “Turn The Lights” and “Ride Like Hell”, the Newfoundland anthem “All Hell For A Basement” and even classics he’s written for other artists like “Highway Of Heroes”.

Over the past year and a half Gordie Johnson entertained a loyal army of fans online with anecdotes from his storied career: encounters with The Rolling Stones, ZZ Top, RUSH, heroes and villains. Tales of triumph and disaster told with his impeccable comedic timing, the One Man Big Sugar Show brings all of this live to the stage.

2014 saw the highly successful album and sold out tour YARDSTYLE  “THE ACOUSTICAL SOUNDS OF BIG SUGAR”. “This will be a far more intimate presentation.” says GJ, “Come on in my kitchen and I’ll cook us up a mess of tunes.” We can see the ingredients as they go in the pot… and cook he does. Acoustic Blues served up by one of Canada’s all time great guitarists, GJ’s sardonic wit also makes for an evening of irreverent laughter and a truly memorable experience.

The Acoustical Sounds of Gordie Johnson is a ONE MAN BIG SUGAR SHOW.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Six-time JUNO Award winning singer-songwriter Johnny Reid has just released his brand new full length album, Love Someone via Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company. Love Someone is available digitally as well as on CD and 2LP 180 Gram Vinyl, stream or order the album HERE.

Love Someone is the artist’s eleventh album and features 14-tracks in which Reid leans into his country roots. The album marks the artist’s most intimate and inspired collection of songs to date. True to Reid’s wide range of repertoire, the album is a refreshing blend of country, pop and soulful ballads. Highlights include the album’s lead single, the pop country track, “Hey Delilah,” the beautifully heartfelt, “I Owe It All To You,” and “Have A Little Faith In Me” a cover of the John Hiatt classic. As a bonus, the album includes a special acoustic version of Reid’s moving song, “People Like You,” dedicated to the people of Nova Scotia after the devastating tragedy that hit their tight knit community in April 2020. In his new video series, Reid shares the stories behind Love Someone and reveals his songwriting process. Watch Take Some Time, Love Someone: The Stories Behind The Music HERE.

“Love Someone is a call to action,” says Reid. “The pandemic has taught us all a lot about the significance of time and how we spend it. We need to look out for each other now more than ever. ‘Roll your windows down, feel the sun, take some time, love someone.’”

Next up for the multi-platinum artist is a long-awaited live tour. The Love Someone National Tour is set to be one of the longest running Canadian tours in history, with tour dates and details being announced later this year. The extensive tour will go cross-country, mainly in small theatres in secondary markets, something Reid has wanted to do for quite some time as an opportunity to connect with his audience through storytelling on a more intimate level.

Over an illustrious career spanning more than two decades, JUNO Award winning singer-songwriter Johnny Reid has captured the hearts of fans and audiences around the world. The critically acclaimed singer is widely known for his lyrical honesty and musical ability, as demonstrated by a vast catalogue of hit songs, platinum selling albums, 26 Canadian Country Music Awards, six JUNO Awards and multiple sold-out national arena tours.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
On their new album Everbound, The Washboard Union secure their status as one of Canada’s preeminent country bands with 10 songs that celebrate the simple joy of life. The follow-up to their 2018 album What We’re Made Of—which earned the trio their first JUNO Award for Breakthrough Group Of The Year—Everbound keeps the good times rolling with an irresistible blend of roof-raising anthems and poignant ballads.

The impeccable three-part harmony and top-notch musicianship once again displayed by Aaron Grain, Chris Duncombe and David Roberts is only one aspect of The Washboard Union’s appeal. With about 30 songs in the running to make Everbound’s final cut, the group was determined to offer only their best material, aided by the keen ears of Nashville producers Gordie Sampson, Thomas “Tawgs” Salter and producer Karen Kosowski, who also co-wrote the album’s uplifting first single “Country Thunder.” Accompanied by a video starring puppet versions of Aaron, Chris and David, its quick rise up Billboard’s Canada Country chart made the song their highest charting single to date.

WITH SPECIAL GUEST CASSIDY MANN

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Late at night, when a hush fell over the house after his kids went to bed, Donovan Woods got to work on his latest album, Without People. In a makeshift recording studio at his Toronto home, the acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter tracked his vocals and guitar alone and then emailed files to producer James Bunton. As Woods’ new songs took shape, backing musicians sketched out their own parts in isolation from their respective homes.

This is not how Woods, winner of the 2019 JUNO Award for contemporary roots album (for Both Ways) and whose global streams have surpassed 210 million, prefers to create music. “So much of what I like about making records is the spontaneity of making music in a room together, and we missed that,” Woods says. “But we tried our best to re-create that feeling.” For an album made so piecemeal, Without People (out now on Woods’ Meant Well label) has been acclaimed as “a nuanced experience” (American Songwriter), a thoughtful exploration of “fleeting interpersonal moments now under the microscope” (NPR/KUTX) and “various aspects of human connection” (Rolling Stone), and for striking “a gentle, poignant note” (Billboard).

Without People prompted Woods to reckon with why his songwriting has been so invested in the human condition throughout his decade-long career. The short answer? Relationships are what bind us, and what matters most is how we treat one another and whether we’re truly listening and trying to understand experiences distinct from our own.

Co-written with Australian pop musician Hayley Warner, “Here in Chicago” (out now) touches on Woods’ favorite subject. “It’s about learning that someone you still have feelings for is suddenly in the same town as you for the night, and the inevitable thoughts and chain of events that might set into motion,” he says. Equally at home in folk and country music, Woods mines small moments to find greater truths on his latest album.

The Mending Circle Project

September 8, 2021

A free exhibit of original art inspired by the theme of “mending” running September 16-October 3 at the HfA Studio in downtown Huntsville

Featuring the work of Beth Ward, Elspeth Wood, Marilyn Daniels, Vicky Mathies, Vera Samarkina and Beverley Hawksley

STUDIO HOURS:
Thursdays & Fridays 12pm-6pm
Saturdays & Sundays 10am-4pm

In the Spring of 2020, Huntsville based artist Beverley Hawksley reached out, looking for a group to join her in The Mending Circle Project. Since September 2020, these six makers have been meeting online to explore the concept of mending. This “circle” resulted in an incredibly successful art show that premiered at the Waterford Old Town Hall this past summer, and will now be presented in Huntsville at the HfA Studio.

The art exhibit features original creations by the 6 artists in response to the theme of mending:

“Since mending can mean many things and its definition offers layers of interpretation—to mend can mean to restore, repair, renew, amend, heal, recover, to grow back together, to rebuild—it can evoke a variety of responses. No matter where we were from in the world, we had childhood memories of learning to keep our clothing in good repair, to mend so that these items lasted; we also discussed how working with our hands facilitated all these things, and simultaneously gave us contemplative time and space to consider the more complex ways mending moved through us.”

Throughout the Exhibit, the Artists will be offering a number of different opportunities:

The Mending Circle Project and special guest, Jessica Vellenga invite you to join us in River Mill Park, Sat. Sept.25, 1:00 – 3:00pm  for a “Mend & Make Well” workshop.
Jessica Vellenga’s Mend & Make Well is an ongoing, participatory artwork about the material items we cherish that tell the stories of our lives.
All are welcome to bring items in need of simple mending and repair.  Participants can share the stories of these items, mend them or learn how to mend them, using traditional hand sewing, darning, knitting and crochet techniques. This sustainable practice allows Jessica to teach historic traditions of fabric craftsmanship and repair to the public, while also offering a gift of mending.

Mending Circle Project with special guest Joyce Jonathan Crone: Oct. 2 1:00- 3:00 River Mill / Courtyard
The Mending Circle Project and special guest, Joyce Jonathan Crone, invite you to join us in River Mill Park, Saturday, Oct. 2 from 1:00-3:00pm for a unique opportunity to connect with community. Joyce is Mohawk, Turtle Clan, born on the Six Nations Reserve.  A retired teacher, she now makes her home in Huntsville. Joyce is a gifted facilitator, humanitarian and an activist for global indigenous issues. In a welcoming space and in keeping with the theme of “mending’, Joyce will share her story and lead us in a talking circle. We are looking forward to seeing you there!

The Trews

June 10, 2021

WE’RE GOING TO HAVE LIVE MUSIC OUTDOORS!!

An intimate acoustic trio performance with Canadian Rock Icons The Trews!

SOLD OUT!

MEMBERS CALL 705-788-2787 TO PURCHASE

These concerts will take place under the open air covered pavilion at the Huntsville Fairgrounds. These are in-person social distanced shows with a maximum audience capacity of 100. Concerts will follow guidance and regulations set out by the Simcoe/Muskoka District Health Unit.

NOTE: There will be one 90 minute acoustic trio set. We are encouraging one person to buy the tickets for each group so we can properly social distance between social bubbles. Ultimately we would love for our guests to buy tickets in groups of 6, but we understand that is not always possible. Seating is a mixture of picnic tables and individual seats. CLICK HERE TO SEE A SEATING CHART Members of the same household or extended bubble may be seated together. Gates open at 6pm. Cash bar available on site provided Lake of Bays Brewery.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

The Trews are among the most prolific, electrifying, and innovative rock bands on the planet. The Nova Scotia-bred combo of singer/guitarist Colin MacDonald, guitarist John-Angus MacDonald, bassist Jack Syperek, and drummer Chris Gormley —songwriters all —has won universal acclaim for both their dazzling live performances and wildly accessible songs.

You’d think a celebrated veteran band like The Trews—with countless radio hits, ecstatic fans from Dublin to Des Moines plus multiple EPs, a pair of live albums and a retrospective—would regard studio album number six as a cinch.

After all, it’s their career equivalent to LedZeppelin’s Physical Graffiti or REM’s Green, the Beatles’ Rubber Soul and The Tragically Hip’s Phantom Power; the apex of decades-long musical ingenuity arriving at a juncture where there is nothing, truly not one thing, left to prove.

Yet you’d be dead wrong. In what can only be described as a rage against stasis, The Trews approached Civilianaires, their electrifying and wildly original follow-up to 2014’s The Trews, the way a contractor tackles a kitchen reno:t tearing things down to the studs, then building out piece by new piece.

“We’re almost in existential-crisis-mode if we don’t have new songs we’re excited about,” guitarist/songwriter John-Angus MacDonald howls on behalf of singer/songwriter Colin MacDonald and bassist Jack Syperek. “With us it’s always ‘What’s next?’ We’re most galvanized while we’re creating. And this new album is a completely fresh take on what we’ve done before.”

Which is not to suggest Trews fans will be bewildered by the towering and multifaceted songs on Civilianaires. Dazzled is more like it, though #jawhitsfloor will doubtless trend when heads wrap around tracks like the seething, staccato, and synth-goosed corker “Harder To Love,” “Is It Too Late” —a sombre, almost hymnal anthem buoyed by piano and a choir —and the cheekily poetic “Bar Star,” its gargantuanchorus described by John-Angus MacDonald as the band’s best ever.

Coming from the rock and roll bruisers who delivered the absurdly sticky “Rise In the Wake,” “Beautiful & Tragic,” and “Hold Me In Your Arms,”that’s a whale of a claim. But nothing about Civilianaires scans as even remotely garden-variety. It’s almost as if the new album leveraged all the obsessive musical minutiae the band has been stockpiling in its collective noggin since their kiddo days playing together in small-town Nova Scotia. (They now call the fast-rising cultural hotbed of Hamilton, Ontario home).

And it’s not just the sonics that are soaring. The lyrics on the year-in-the-making Civilianaires also carry gravitas, as evidenced by the blistering a git-prop rant (and bona fide rock-radio hit) “The New US,” which takes aim at a certain orange-hued world leader, a.k.a. “the little man who isn’t home, his little hands arm the drones.”

“We’ve dabbled with politics before,” John-Angus MacDonald confirms. “We have a song called ‘Gun Control’ from our third record (2008’s No Time for Later)that refuses to go away because the issue refuses to go away. But who can ignore what’s going on now? It’s a rage-r of a song about a rage-r of a topic.”

Indeed. Still, if there is an overarching takeaway from Civilianaires—apart from the fact that it’s a head-spinner from start to finish —it’s that The Trews were fearless in confronting potential creative inertia, even if that meant discarding a proven jam-to-studio method that has so far earned near-universal critical acclaim and a heap of prestigious gigs with the likes of the Rolling Stones, Robert Plant, and Bruce Springsteen

Her album, The Art of Falling Apart (released in March 2021), chronicles Serena’s journey from mental illness to wellness. The album was written and recorded over 10 days, and the track listing allows the listener to follow Serena’s creative process in a truly linear sense. Each song was recorded the day it was written, featuring raw, unprocessed vocals.

The album is one piece of a greater movement for Serena as a leader in mental health and wellness. A longtime advocate, Serena has worked with a variety of health and wellness initiatives, and in 2018 won the Margaret Trudeau Mental Health Advocacy Award. She has presented her keynote speech (also named The Art of Falling Apart) to audiences across Canada, and will soon release a shortened animated version to grow its impact around the world. Recently, she launched The Art of Wellness —a free mindfulness program for artists and creatives. ABOUT THE ARTIST

Taking their name from the word for heart in the Afro-Cuban religion of Santeria, the women-led ensemble OKAN fuses Afro-Cuban roots with jazz, folk and global rhythms in songs about immigration, courage and love.

Having recently worked with Bomba Estereo, Lido Pimienta and Dayme Arocena, OKAN recently followed up on their Juno-nominated and Independent Music Award-winning debut album Sombras, with their sophomore release Espiral. This album recently won a 2021 JUNO for World Music Album.

Espiral delves deeper into the group’s rich Cuban roots, finding renewed inspiration in this rich musical heritage. The Santeria influences are most evident in the title track, Espiral which uniquely blends guajira, the folk genre of Eastern Cuba, with Santeria-derived chants.

Born in Havana, Cuba, Elizabeth Rodriguez is a classically trained violinist who served as concertmaster for Havana’s Youth Orchestra. Magdelys Savigne hails from Santiago de Cuba and graduated with honours in orchestral percussion from Havana’s University of the Arts. Artist Bios:

James Gray is a contemporary version of an old-school traveling folk singer. Over the years James has been endlessly criss-crossing Canada, Europe and Australia in pursuit of seeing the world and entertaining folks along the way. Notably James was a musical guest on the TED Talks held on the west coast of Canada, and recently James has received regular airplay on CBC radio programs including Fresh Air with Nana Aba Duncan and Ontario morning with Wei Chen. This past year Gray was invited to perform at both the 2019 Mariposa Folk Festival and the 2019 Troubadour Festival in James’ home of central Ontario.

“James Gray is a dynamic singer/songwriter with a spirited, compelling sound that speaks to us all. With a stage presence that commands your attention his music is expressive and soulful. He garners followers wherever he performs. James is a musical talent not to be missed!” Pam Carter, Mariposa Folk Foundation President/Festival Chairperson

In Twenty-Ten, Bet Smith settled in to a tiny cabin on the west coast of Canada. Far-removed from everyday conveniences like running water and electricity, Bet learned to find comfort in a
give-and-take relationship with the land. Growing food, cooking over a fire, pulling water from the ground, waking up to see her breath hanging in the air on cold winter mornings; she learned
to settle in with nature’s rhythms and embrace her dependence on the earth. Her reverence for nature soon began to show up in her music. Love songs would become adorned with imagery of wilderness, angst and heartbreak would often be for and on behalf of the earth.

In 2014 Bet returned home to Ontario and connected with multi-instrumentalists Rob and Andrew Currie. Eventually they would record two LPs and perform at venues and festivals
throughout their home region. Crafting songs from an unusually vast palette of experiences, Bet Smith speaks to listeners from every walk of life. Stylistically, Bet moves freely between alternative-folk and traditional country and is often acknowledged for her clever phrasing and unencumbered self-taught style.

Michael Bernard Fitzgerald Farm Tour

September 17, 2020

A NOTE FROM MICHAEL AND HIS TEAM:
With the uptick of Covid cases in Ontario we have had to assess the plans for Farm Tour. We are disappointed to announce the postponement of your live show.
Since the onset of the tour we have had to keep in mind the nature of the times and remain flexible to any changes in the rules as well as in the general comfort level of individuals in each of the areas we visit.
While the show can still operate under Ontario’s current safety guidelines and gathering rules, we have the sense that postponing the show will not only ensure everyone’s safety, but comfort levels as well.
Farm Tour has allowed an incredible opportunity for Canadians to experience live music safely during this time, and connect with one another in a meaningful way – from 6 feet apart.  The success of the tour so far can only be attributed to people like you open to trying something different. Your support is beyond appreciated.
Your original show will transfer to a live stream. This email will be followed by an invitation to a live stream date. Each show will be streamed with limited numbers allowing for the same intimate conversation style concert The Greenbriar would have allowed for.
Your tickets will access you to the live stream and be transferred to a new live show date when the time is right for us to return to your city.
—————————————————-

Part of a cross country tour of Michael’s new record “Love Valley” to farms across Canada. Each night hosts 20 people in a traveling open-air venue called The Greenbriar. Tickets available through michaelbernardfitzgerald.com – we will update capacity information in keeping with provincial and federal decisions regarding Covid19. In the event that the show has to be rescheduled we will set a new date and continue with a streamed event on the original scheduled date.

Each set of four tickets will reflect one household or Covid cohort** Please input all guests email addresses and phone numbers. Directions, instructions and Covid related safety precautions will be relayed day of event (site will be no further than 45 minutes from city centre by vehicle). In the event of cancelation for any reason a new date will be set and a private live stream will take place on the original date.

———————————————————-

The show takes place at Woodfield Sky River Farm: a Therapeutic Animal Farm which includes 59 goats. Come early at 7pm to have a visit!

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Defining a genre with his sure-footed everyman approach, in June 2020, the platinum selling entertainer released “Wreck This” a 6-song EP featuring the single “No Truck Song” and the summertime anthem “Floatin’.” Produced by Jeff Coplan and co-written by Hicks, Jeff Coplan and Bruce Wallace, ‘No Truck Song’ follows Hicks’ #1 chart-topper “What A Song Should Do”.

“It’s so much fun,” shares Hicks about ‘No Truck Song’. “On every album I usually add one or two songs that are a little tongue-in-cheek, designed to give fans (and me!) a chuckle, but we’ve never released one as a single before. We smiled and laughed a lot while we wrote it, so I hope fans hear that, and it makes them do the same!”

Hicks continues to lead the way, expanding the songwriting and style that helped define today’s country music. The platinum selling entertainer is a “true star on the Canadian country music scene” (GoBe Weekly), “proving he knows how to tailor his songs to his ever-expanding audience” and commemorating his wide-open sound as one of the defining influences on today’s Canadian County Music.

Building from local acclaim to a nationally recognized name, Hicks has cemented his reputation as an elite chart-topping act since making his country label debut in 2013. The platinum selling entertainer’s catalogue of highly praised releases including: “Throw Down”, “5:01”, “5:01+”, “Shake These Walls” and most recently, 2018’s “New Tattoo”, have earned the four-time JUNO Award nominee and CCMA Award winner, two PLATINUM selling singles, 7 GOLD singles, one GOLD album and thirteen Top 10 radio hits including the No. 1 chart-topper “What A Song Should Do” – all with his long-time label Open Road Recordings, in addition to multiple sold-out headlining dates and back to back national tours.

The first recipient of the Nielsen Compass Award, an honour that recognizes an artist for the most total content plays including streams, single and album sales as well as total social media following, Hicks released his fourth full-length studio album “New Tattoo” in June (2018) and followed with the national “Get Loud” headlining tour last fall, where he partnered with PLUS1 and donated $1 from every ticket to the Unison Fund and their work providing counseling and emergency relief services to the Canadian music community. The album’s first single “LOUD”, was licensed by the NHL in North America – adding to his collective 60+ million streams worldwide to date.
